Aboriginal Art and Culture

Many of the paintings contain encyclopaedic and invaluable knowledge of the Australian landscape. The paintings are an actual mapping, not only of ancestral journeys, creating the landscape, but of information about the availability and sites of water and food. Elements of Aboriginal culture and lore are also present, though disguised or hidden from us as outsiders or the uninitiated.

‘Luminous’ is a touring exhibition and was curated by Manly Regional Gallery in Sydney, Australia. It is designed to show how the early Indigenous painting movement from the 1970s has developed into one of the most significant contemporary art movements of the late 20th century.
