Peter Nambarlambarl was a senior Kunwinjku artist from Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) in west Arnhem Land. Born in 1930 he became a distinguished artist using the traditional style of rarrk painting, often portraying spirits that have mortamorphosed into rocks at important rock art sites. He passed away in 2001 leaving a rich oeuvre of intricate, majestic bark painting and works on paper.
Peter Nambarlambarl assisted anthropologists and other visitors to reach and respect rock art and sacred sites on his traditional Gunbalanya hill country having learned to paint through his father and grandfather.
Characterised by rarrk (cross-hatching) and cultural narratives, Nambarlambarl exhibited in Australia and internationally, his work now being held in collections such as the National Gallery of Australia. Exhibitions includePower of the Land (1994), the 9th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (1992), and international shows like Awake to the Dreamtime (San Diego, 1993, 1995). He also received recognition at the 2000 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.
